Surefire Tips To Improve Your Golf Swing

A well executed golf back swing is not just dependent on the arms of the golfer but also on the golfer’s back as he turns away from the target. The golf swing is more of the motion of putting the golf club behind the golfer’s back than swinging it through the air. Here are some surefire tips to improve your golf swing and your game dramatically.


1. The move backswing

If you observe it closely, the golf back swing actually works from up to down. The takeaway back swing begins from the top as you make the movement on your arms and follows as you do that turn on your shoulders. The movement then goes straight down towards the legs and the hips.


The golf back swing is primarily about how the body is being coiled upwards thus creating the needed tension in the muscles as well as torque to be able to let out that all powerful downswing. Particularly, that swing is created anywhere in between the golfer turning his or her upper body as well as shoulders and the turning, to a lesser degree, the lower body and the hips.


2. Relax Your Body

4. The follow-through move

A follow-through should be best seen as the feather in your cap move. The legs must be adequately straight and the hips have to form a straight line together with the legs.


This final follow-through move will serve as the gauge of the whole golf swing you have just done. You know that you were able to execute a good golf swing that is almost perfect if in the end you have a position that looks like the letter C only in reverse.

We start with the most basic question. Why is proper health and nutrition important to play better golf?

Golf is a game that requires a combination of mechanics, concentration, balance, strength and stamina. When it comes to playing a better game of golf we usually pay the price for a lesson, a golf program online, or simply long hours on the driving range trying to improve our game.

Often a golfer neglects the one thing he/she can control and that’s basic health and nutrition.

Proper health is one of the most crucial parts to your game for helping or hurting your performance on the golf course. It can help you feel better, prevent injuries that cause pain, and can even help in your concentration on the golf course. Therefore, correct nutrition preparation such as the quality of food one eats and a balanced diet must be taken into consideration to achieve the best performance on the golf course so you can play better golf.

Understanding the importance of health and nutrition and implementing a solid plan is a great beginning point to playing better golf. In essence, what you eat can determine how you play.

The best place to start is a routine that involves aerobic exercise as well as a specific training for the muscles involved in a golf swing. In addition, fitness training that involves proper stretches to increase your flexibility is a must.

As you follow this routine, when you get to that place of wanting to sit on the coach instead of work on your fitness, grab a hold of that mental picture of YOU playing great golf. Surprising Tip # 3: Basic Health Keys For Actual Day Of Playing Golf

Let’s take this one step at a time now.

So what are some basic keys to keep in mind during the actual day of your golf game.

Key #1: This might seem obvious but is often overlooked by many golfers. You have to eat a real breakfast. I don’t mean rush out the door on an empty stomach and pick up a donut to go with your coffee either. I mean a real sit down breakfast that is necessary to start your day out right, especially if you have 18 holes planned for the day. Even if you plan on taking a golf cart for the round, this is still an essential key!

You need protein and carbohydrates and the right kind of fats. This helps in your overall digestion and insures you are getting the proper nutrients. Try a couple of eggs and a bowl of oatmeal instead of a sugar high donut or sweets start. Or if you are in a rush, consider a hard boil egg with some form of food high in carbohydrates. Skip the sugar and don’t go over board with the caffeine.

Don’t skip this meal! You will need that slow and steady release of energy to see you through difficult or long hours of play.

Key #2: This involves correct warm up. Before you hit that first shot on the first tee, give your body a chance! Stretch! Hit a few range balls to warm up. And stretch some more. Don’t over practice on the range. Just hit enough balls to get a sense of your tempo and to loosen up any tight muscles. This one key could help you the most as you walk up to that first tee box!

Key #3: Drink lots of liquid. Don’t forget to drink about 6 ounces of water or a sport drink while you are actually on the golf course. If drinking a beer is tempting you, imagine beating your friends and having them buy you that first brewskie at the 19th hole!

And finally Key #4: Snack wisely. Those pretty ladies driving the snack and beverage cart are not always known for having healthy choices. So don’t put yourself in a position to have to rely on them.

Bring bananas, nutrition bars, dried fruit, apples or a sports bar. When you see the pros chomping on a banana or apple, they are not necessarily doing that because they are hungry as much as making sure they can maintain energy through their high pressured grueling round.

You need to do the same. Even if you don’t feel hungry, grab that apple and chomp!

Surprising Tip #4: Nutrition and Health Advice Overall

This tip fits right along with health keys for the day you actually play. There is no one perfect or specific food or diet plan that will fit every golfers’ needs. And please do get your doctor’s advice, especially if you have specific health problems.

The most basic beginning is to drink plenty of water every day. We cannot stress that enough.

Also make a daily choice to eat whole, unrefined, grain products over highly processed food options. This will mean a change in your thinking as much as your eating habits if you eat out a lot. You can do this! Just think before you eat. Avoid the high processed or sugar based foods.

Take a daily multi-vitamin/mineral. Your body needs all the supplements it can get, especially if you are not used to watching what you eat. This has become a big key for me as I study and learn more about amazing supplements and vitamin drinks full of antioxidants!

Finally, choose products and fruits high in antioxidants. Eat that apple instead of the candy bar! The importance of antioxidants will be discussed in detail later in this book.

Success at playing golf largely revolves around your golf skills and the most important aspect is your golf swing. The ability to execute a powerful and balanced golf swing is the key to mastering golf. Here are some proven power tips to improve your golf swing.


Power Tip 1

A great golf swing is more than just swinging with your arms. Swing your golf club behind your back while you turn it to your target. It is like taking your club back as you hinge your arm at your shoulder. You could also practice the drill known as no arms.


Power Tip 2

You should not forget to cock your wrists. This might be difficult at first, but it will be natural to you with enough practice and will produce tremendous results.


Power Tip 3

Your left arm should turn clockwise slightly when you start the back swing. It is not really something that you actually should remember. It naturally happens if you would just allow it. This just means that you should not resist this movement that is just natural. You might not notice it, but you might have been resisting this movement because this causes the head of your golf club to go open slightly when you swing it. Just allow it to happen naturally.


Power Tip 4

Always plant your feet firmly on the ground. This technique is also commonly used in baseball. It involves letting your foot heel in front to come above the ground when you swing your golf club back. Some people think that by doing this so, their back swing feels bigger.


It is something that seems lifting the front heel can easily make the body coil and for the tension to build that much harder. Letting the foot roll freely to the inside is fine. However, one should keep that foot on the ground to make golf back swing well-anchored.


Power Tip 5

Work on your bottom golf down swing. Assuming that you accomplish all the drills correctly, from the golf stance, the golf grip you have, and your golf back swing. But you can still ruin everything if you begin the golf swing that you have with the shoulders. You might want to use a swing trigger to begin the golf down swing that you have with the lower part of your body.

Another tip on your golf down swing. You should turn the belt buckle to your target. Try turning your hips as powerful and fast as possible when you do your golf down swing, it works.

Golf Specific Stretches to Improve Your Golf Swing

Recently, I had the opportunity to receive hands-on instruction from golf teaching guru, Hank Haney. Now, this was obviously a special opportunity since Hank basically only teaches Tiger Woods, and the junior players at his academy in Hilton Head, South Carolina.

Hank has a specific golf swing theory that he is confident will allow the golfer to hit the nine main golf shots with consistency, at will. This includes the straight shot, with low, medium or high trajectory, a draw with these three trajectories, and a fade with these three trajectories. If a golfer can swing the golf club efficiently, he or she should feel comfortable hitting any one of these shots when the situation calls for it.

Hank’s theory is that the club shaft should maintain the same angle throughout the golf swing as its starting position at address. This is not the so-called one-plane golf swing. Hank dismisses that idea. However, his theory is that the club shaft should swing on the same plane “angle” on different planes, throughout the golf swing.

Now, although I always felt I had a pretty good shoulder turn, my lesson with Hank indicated that I was not getting the full shoulder turn I need to maintain this one plane angle with a full golf swing. Instead, my left shoulder would drop slightly, and my head would also drop, during the back swing. As a result, I was not making the full shoulder turn that would allow me to swing the club on the consistent shaft angle that Hank indicates will lead to more consistent ball striking. Instead, the angle of my club shaft would at times be too flat or too steep, and ultimately I would need to have exceptional timing to hit the ball straighter.

I’ve stated in a previous article that flexibility is more important than strength for initially trying to add distance to your golf game. In trying to make the fuller shoulder turn that Hank was making me do during my lesson, I realized that I probably need to work on stretching my upper body some more. I will note that I also have a bit of a neck issue related to a skiing wreck when I was a teenager. As such, this may limit how much of a turn I can ultimately make. The swing can still be effective if I must make only a three-quarter swing, and I can still generate power in other ways, but I will make a go out of trying to generate a full swing by increasing my flexibility.

Flexibility is such a key to improving the golf swing, that even Charles Barkley, while working with Hank Haney to solve his full swing yip, has focused his attention on stretching. At the same time, he has lost 30 pounds as well. It is no secret now that fitness is one of the big keys to improving your golf game!

Therefore, I will increase my attention on stretching the upper body as I look to improve my golf swing. Below are descriptions of the primary stretching exercises I will utilize in improving my flexibility. If you want to improve your golf game, I suggest you work on these simple exercises as well!

Back Stretch – Twist

Lay flat on your back, arms out to sides and palms down, with your knees bent and feet flat to the floor. Shift onto your left hip, keeping your back flat to the floor. Lower your knees to the left side, so that the left knee and thigh lay on the floor. Place your left hand on your right knee, and pull the right knee down to floor…at the same time your head should be turned to the right, facing your right hand. Hold for 30 seconds, then slowly switch positions to the other side.

Lying Down Shoulder Stretch

While sitting on the floor, legs stretched out front, and back straight, interlock your hands on the floor behind your back. Slide your feet forward as far as they will go, feeling the stretch in the front of the shoulders. Hold that position for 30 seconds.

Trunk Rotations

Hold a staff or a broomstick behind your neck, with your arms outstretched along the staff. At the golf course, you can do a version of this with your driver, with on hand on the grip, and the other down near the clubhead.

Standing with your feet shoulder width apart, slowly turn your body as far to the left as possible, hold for a second, then slowly twist to the right, as far as possible. Repeat 10 times to each side, and each time try to turn a little further.

Elbow Pull Shoulder Stretch

Standing with your feet shoulder width apart, or sitting in an upright position with your back straight, extend your left arm forward, reach under and slightly behind your left elbow with your right hand, then draw the left arm in toward your body and across to the right. You should feel this stretch in the back and side of your left deltoid muscle of the shoulder. Hold this stretch for 30 seconds, then perform this same stretch with the right shoulder.
